This chapter reviews recent research on the causes and epidemiology of African swine fever (ASF). It discusses the causative agent for ASF, its origins in Africa to its spread into other regions of the world. It looks at the distribution of genotype I and II strains. After summarizing clinical indicators of the disease, it summarizes research on the different cycles involved in transmission and their dynamics.
