Description

An organic diet based on regionally produced feed components is a fundamental goal in organic pig production. There is a huge unexploited potential in implementing local produced “green feed components” in organic pig diets as a sustainable alternative to the current high reliance on concentrates like processed cereals and oil seed feed sources. This chapter concerns greed feed in organic pig farming with an emphasis on studies conducted under the conditions of Denmark and Northern Europe. The authors present findings from recent research on the energy and protein (amino acid) requirements of organic pigs. This is followed by a discourse on the possibility of enhancing the nutritional value of organic pig diets by incorporating more forage, either through direct foraging or by allocating roughage, as well as incorporating "green protein" sources.
